Why do people work like this?

how come some people react strange to big events, like specifically whati mean is there was a 6.0 earthquake where i live somewhat big and my water spilled and my only concern (while the earthquake is going on) was to grab the nearest towel and clean up the water. another case is my friend was skateboarding with a camera to get like a 1st person view and he fell and he was like dude is my camera okay. so why do some people ignore the bigger event like that? its kinda interesting. thanksWhy do people work like this?
it usually means that they are a good person. They are putting something else before themself. :)Why do people work like this?
Purple hair is no turn-off to my friends. Hey this is my avatar and I can do what I want with it. There's nothing wrong with becoming more tolerant. Nor is there anything wrong with getting out a dictionary or going to a dictionary site and figuring out what certain words mean.

I bet you have been in a lot of earthquakes and your friend has fallen off the skateboard a lot. People exposed regularly to dangerous situations come to accept those things as a part of life.
I would say it has to do with a number of factors. You might want to study up on Carl Jung and the Myers-Briggs/Kiersy test. I can imagine all 4 parameters of the Myers-Briggs test applying here.

There is introversion vs. extroversion. Extroverts tend to have shallow friendships with nearly anyone, whereas introverts tend to have deep friendships with just a few. The extrovert might get excited over a trajedy because everyone else is, and the introvert might probably only be aroused if it affected people they knew.

There is sensiveness (not to be confused with sensitiveness) vs. intuition. The sensive person only cares about facts and figures and what is happening at the current. The intuitive cares more about greater principles and how things of the past and future fit into the overall scheme of things. Applied to a natural disaster, an intuitive might respond, ';Big deal, people die every day, what is so significant about this?'; while the sensive might come back with, ';Don't you care what is happening right now?';

There is also thinking vs. feeling, or objective vs. subjective. That would cause differences in responding and what is important to the individual. In a 9/11 situation, the thinker might be upset that the government let the terrorists in or didn't heed advanced warnings, where as the feelers may tune into the sensationalism and be upset that so many lives were lost. We've seen this divide in regards to the V-Tech tragedy. One portion is debating over gun laws, and the other portion is highlighting the tragedy and focusing on the emotions and grief. So it is a logical vs. humanitarian way of dealing with the same problem.

Then there is perception vs. judgement. The names are misnomers, it is more about randomness vs. order. This is probably the most divisive of the Myers-Briggs pairs. A perceptive person just goes with the flow and it not particularly disturbed by chaos. They can make meaning of the order that is contained within the chaos. A judger is one who has to have things arranged, organized, and planned certain ways to be able to even function. A perceptive may search through a briefcase by moving things around, the judger might remove items to look. So to a perceiver, getting hurt or bending some rules is just part of their job. To a judger, it is about rules and order. To the perceiver might be better at field work, photography, that sort of thing. The judger might be better in administration and service type jobs.

There are other factors such as exposure. Those who are exposed to certain types of things more tend to expect them. If a person lives in an inner city, they probably don't freak out after hearing about another murder. That is what they live around and they know that happens in their neighborhood. There was a church upstate somewhere that was having a smoke break in the middle of the service. So those who smoked went outside, and while they were outside, a gang member shot and killed a member of a rival gang. The church members just took another couple of drags off of their cigarettes and went back inside as if nothing happened.
