What ever happened to Customer Service? WHY is it so hard for people working retail to Smile & say Hello?

I go shopping to spend my hard earned money but it seems most people who work in retail hate their jobs and half the time they don't even lift their heads to awknowledge you as you purchase something from the place of business they work at.

A hello or good morning is all that is needed to say to a customer, why is it so hard to do this?

I understand that maybe you are having a bad day but DON'T bring it to work with you!

If you have a job please take pride in it no matter what it is, the more you try and smile and act cheerfull the more you will actually feel this way.

Remember, what goes around comes around. How would you feel if you were treated this way when you are the customer.

Think About it!What ever happened to Customer Service? WHY is it so hard for people working retail to Smile %26amp; say Hello?
it can be chalked up to the general impatience of modern humans. in a world where you can do everything online in the blink of an eye, no-one wants to wait for anything, anymore.

the hardest thing about my crappy jobs was not the work, itself, but the needlessly cruel attitude of the customers at large--treating me like crap just because i was on the clock. as much as you try and smile and ';yes, sir'; and ';ma'am';, some peole just think that if you're working in a store, you're there for their amusement.

try being nice and patient with the employees, and you'll be suprised at the result you'll get. What ever happened to Customer Service? WHY is it so hard for people working retail to Smile %26amp; say Hello?

Don't know but lately it seems really hard to get a retail job. I've never worked retail but have interviewed and I'm always very friendly in the interview and would be very friendly if I worked there, but they won't hire me. Maybe they prefer to hire rude people.

why is it hard? i think the problem is for people only see their side of the story. I know it's just as stressful to be on either side of the situation, but if both the customer and the person working were polite, there wouldn't be any problems...

It's very rude but most of the time they're teens saving for a car or some1 that doesn't want that job but needs to make a living. Lately it seems as if every1 has somthin up thier butt
I could not agree with you more!!! Partial answer? Take a look at the impression left by about half the people asking questions here. Another possible answer? Managers that don't know, don't want to know and don't care. Give me the older generation!!!
I suppose maybe some customers are rude, pushy and very unreasonable. Maybe the pay isn't all that great and they work long hours with low pay.

But I guess that still isn't a reason not to just be polite to the customers.

Maybe its just the ';hell, this isn't my business why should I give two hoots?'; mentality that many of the workers go on. That and not enough worker benefits, maybe?
A lot of it has to do with the attitudes of the customers. As someone that used to work retail, I cannot tell you the amount of times I tried greeting the customer with a smile and a ';hello'; or something to that affect, only to have them rudely say something like, ';Just ring up my order so I can get out of this place.'; Or had them practically throw their money at me when it was time to pay. For some reason, a lot of people think that the person working retail is somehow ';beneath'; them, and treat them that way.
Allot of good answers I believe it starts at the top. If there is good ownership and management, if the employees are held accountable and treated and compensated fairly then you will be treated right by professional employees and if you treat them badly their managers will stand up for them. The only solution is to not spend your money at places that don鈥檛 treat you with respect. Unfortunately we all have to go to the DMV.
Oddly enough, companies that encourage their staff to be pleasant (or, even, heaven forfend, train them that way!) tend to do better, keep their customers and have better showings in customer satisfaction polls.

Much of the rudeness shown by customers is a result of frustrations and and anger over previous bad experiences with poor or unprofessional customer service, you can't altogether blame them.

I work for a large specialist retail chain, in which *everyone* is encouraged, trained and motivated to be pleasant and helpful. Customers frequently mention how different it is, and comment on the fact that the ';other people'; don't give a damn. And they come back to my store next time.

In general, sadly, the concept of ';service'; is an endangered animal....
I totally agree with catnip. I used to work in retail, and a lot of the time when I would say hi and ask customes how they were doing they'd just glare at me and say ';what do you care?'; or some other sarcastic/mean remark. Not everyone was that way, but it goes both ways. How would you feel if you were the person behind the counter, trying to be friendly and people sometimes literally yelled at you for it? Add to that the fact that cashier jobs don't pay very well and there are always disgruntaled co-workers; it really can affect a person's attitude.
I am a Grocery Store Manager, and we strive on customer service. In todays world us Grocery stores need to be able to do something to keep our customers shopping with us and to gain new customers. If you do not practice good customer service Wal-Mart will put you out of business.

What do I mean by customer service? My employees are taught that the customers are their bosses, and without the customer, there would not be a job for them.My employees are to greet customers as they come into the store and as they leave the store. They are also to keep all their problems at home before coming to work and wear a smile as soon as they punch in for their shift. We even started this new thing...we walk our customers to their vehicles, unload their groceries and push cart back to the store. When it rains we have guys that walk the customers to their cars under large umbrellas.

In my store you will see customer service is a constant practice.I am sorry you went through an ordeal where ever you last shopped,I would say I would never shop there again!!!
