Why would people rather believe a made-up story than live with not knowing how things work?

It seems like before we were able to scientifically explain how the world works, people would make up stories about gods and spirits causing everything that happens in nature. The sun moving across the sky, rain, volcanic eruptions, etc. So why would everyone just accept these stories as facts? Why would people rather believe a made-up story than live with not knowing how things work?
some people like to believe in a higher being as a comfort. like god, they know that, when they die, he will take them to a wonderful place and everyone will be loving and happy. it makes people not scared about dying. so they like to keep these stories to comfort them and a simple story of a god creating the world is easier then going into complicated fatcs of mass, energy, matter, anti-matter.......Why would people rather believe a made-up story than live with not knowing how things work?
If you didn't know any better than why would you question it? I also believe now (despite science) faith or mythology is more inspiring for some than the cold hard facts.
ignorance IS bliss.

and not everyone believes in gods... and what if they are right? who knows.... we wont know until it's too late.
We are able to scientifically explain the world? Wow, where did you learn that? Science can only explain how we perceive the world. It cannot really explain anything. The universe and our existence is a paradox. Math itself can pretty much prove the universe does not exist. Ok, for you science that can explain everything.. here is one for you, something that science says in simple but in reality is impossible. Start at 1 and count to 2. Sounds easy.. nope. Its not even possible. Not only is it impossible to get to 2, it not even possible to get to the next point. Because before 2 is. 1.01, before that, 1.001, then 1.0001. I can go on for a billion trillion years and never get any closer to 2. And since in travel you have to pass every point to get to another, motion itself is a paradox. Science is a tool to measure perception, not reality, and only proves we know nothing.
Because it provides the illusion of control, to some degree. After all, if we understand how it works, we may be able to influence it, whether it be by burning incense, or praying.
