Why would people rather believe a made-up story than live with not knowing how things work?

It seems like before we were able to scientifically explain how the world works, people would make up stories about gods and spirits causing everything that happens in nature. The sun moving across the sky, rain, volcanic eruptions, etc. So why would everyone just accept these stories as facts?Why would people rather believe a made-up story than live with not knowing how things work?
Some people find comfort in knowing all of the answers. Maybe it helps them sleep at night. I think this question may also work well in the psychology section.Why would people rather believe a made-up story than live with not knowing how things work?
Something i don't understand either.

The laws in Deuteronomy were centuries ahead of medical science.

Hygiene laws for example saved the Jews from diseases yet they never knew what bacteria was yet God knew and gave them the laws of not touching dead bodies and burying their faeces outside the camp.

Doctors during Pasteur's day scoffed about having to wash their hands or surgical instruments when treating from patient to patient.



The only made up stories belong to Babylon the Great of world false religions. But Satan the father of the lie is behind them.
I find it interesting that those same people who we feel are scientifically inferior to our generation are the same ones who built the pyramids, the great wall of china, the first large vessels to traverse the oceans, etc. Not to mention that pretty much everything we know today due to scientific observation was built upon those that came before us. Pity we're not as smart as they are ;)
Then there isn't so much to memorize for the tests.

So Scientist could come along and investigate and pin point what they think is the facts. Evolution to me is an Optical Illusion. People percieve it the way they want. Some people see it through their chosen faith and it works for them and they have all their documnetation and scientist see it in a different way and they have their documnetation. When it comes down to the nit n gritty... its all a belief system. If you believe in something long and hard enough then its your own truth. Subjecting others to see your truth I think is not fair to others beliefs. Changing someones personal truth- what accomplishment is that when neither person knows the true facts until they are gone. I am more of a physics type of person. You create your own reality. There is cause and effect in everything. Including your own beliefs. I love religion and think all of them have beauty. I am spiritual and confident in my own beliefs. There is balance and thats all that matters to me.
