Please it great to have job like this one but after more than ten year of this it get old when everyone else is taking a vacation. Well look at you, Texas has fewer regulations on large corporations and those corporations now require more people to work more hours. And then you have California that overly regulates, increased layoffs, and a higher unemployment rate. Do not be fooled, we are only pretty on the outside. Deregulated corporations have to be competitive to recruit and retain employees. A valuable person with marketable job skills should be capable of negotiating his or her own salary contracts in the absence of government interference.
Regarding California's time and a half and double time labor laws, I recall being paid those only after 40 hours per week and 60 hours per week less than ten years ago. So this 8 and 12 revision must be fairly recent if that helps to limit down your research at all. Probably the unions' idea.
