How do I talk to people at work in the cafeteria?

I usually get so bored because I get to work early and I dont know anyone who works on my shift that sits in the cafeteria and theres usually a lounge there with a tv and I usually just do my own thing and hang by myself but I want to kill some time so I really want to socialize with people at work (people I dont know at all who arnt in my dept) and I was wondering how can I go about doing that? What would be appropriate without invading their space? What would be a good conversation to have with them? Its silly asking them work questions like what dept they work in because I know if someone I didnt know and if I was in their shoes, I wouldnt want to be bothered if I was with people I know but, I know the cafeteria is a public place to eat food and share with people but I want to get friendly with people at work and get to know some people who work at the company but I dont know what I should say because its not a social club to make friends but however, I just want to join some people who I see alot. What should I say or do? I wouldnt mind eating with them and sharing the table but usually they are with their own co-workers and I dont see anyone by themselves. Approach the friendliest looking people and just say you are bored and would they care if you joined them. Most people I know would welcome someone, some wouldn't so choose carefully.
This is a most weird question that doesn't make much sense. I used to work in a place with a cafeteria and I talked to the cafeteria workers like they were people. What's so hard about this?
I worked at a place in Denver that was like that. I'm saying, just grab a cup of coffee, and take a seat-when someone comes in, say hi, or good morning-if it's a guy (not trying to stereotype,) maybe ask him what he thought of the game. If you have a newspaper, a lot of times, people will just come up to you and ask you about stuff, or comment about the debates, the upcoming election, whatever. just let nature take its course.
